Some safety tips for you:
Acclimatise - keep moving your body so that it gets used to the cold
Kit - make sure to dress accordingly to seasons (wear a wetsuit if required).
Be aware - of others around you, of wildlife, of your limits and only swim where you can see it is safe.
Make sure there's a warm cup of tea waiting for you at the end!
